Welcome to the website of textile artist Martha C. Hall. This is the place to see my art and to see where my work is currently on exhibit. Check out my blog to see what I’m doing in the studio. I balance creating my art with doing some freelance quilt making for a commercial fabric designer, not to mention the demands of family and daily life. I also always have at least a dozen new ideas buzzing around in my head! Because I often need to switch focus I call my business "Chameleon Studios" - changing my colors to adapt to the situation of the moment.
I am an artist working with fabric and other materials to create studio art quilts. Because I have so many ideas my work is varied and eclectic, though when seen as a body of work it definitely conveys my unique style. My art is a way to express my ideas on a range of topics - personal, social, and spiritual.
I am currently juggling work on three varied series of quilts. My Split Circles series uses the circle form to represent anything from the spiritual and universal to the mundane and practical. The circle is often considered a perfect shape; I split the circle to represent imperfection and dichotomy.
In my conceptual quilts I use credit cards as a primary material. Initially collected to use simply as another color element in addition to the fabric, the use of credit cards naturally became a material that I use to convey social and political meaning.
My current work in progress uses the idea of the apron as a symbol of Womens' Work. This new series is very exciting to explore and new work will be showcased in an upcoming two-woman show in October and November 2010. See my "Exhibitions" page for details on that show.
Unifying elements in my art are use of color, attention to detail, and technical skill. My work is always conceived with intention, yet I remain open to intuition and all the possibilities that present themselves as the work evolves.
Thank you for stopping by! Come back often to check out my current art activities on my blog, and to stay up-to-date with my exhibit schedule.
